Dear Editor,
I READ with interest the article “Green Xchange project in Kg Sg Kebun: Environmental awareness increasing” that appeared in The Brunei Times issue dated September 3. I have to agree that more efforts must be made to cultivate awareness among Bruneians on the importance of preserving the environment.
I remember reading a few years ago that Bruneians lack a satisfactory level of understanding of environmental concerns. Some experts say that the level of knowledge or perhaps the intensity of enthusiasm over environmental issues, in general, and on climate change, in particular, is not that significant among the populace of Brunei Darussalam. Meaning that we are aware about preserving the environment, but are not that active about the issue as we are tied with our busy and hectic work schedule. This lack of understanding is demonstrated by the fact that environmental terms such as “global warming” and “climate change” may not be fully appreciated by a large section of the community.
I think our community should heed the advice given by experts and give more support to government agencies and NGOs in generating public awareness programmes on preserving our beautiful environment.
Wishful Thinking,
Menglait
