THE Society for Community Outreach & Training (SCOT) yesterday launched a programme to boost youths’ confidence in speaking English.
The 11-week basic English course, dubbed SCOT Education 2014, will be conducted at the Youth Development Centre.
The course will commence this April with eight classes. Each class can accommodate more than 15 students. One trainer will be assigned to each class to assist the students for an hour every Friday.
Sponsored by HSBC Brunei, the programme is run in collaboration with the Organisation for Building Community Resources (OBCR), Cambodia.
Following the completion of the course, six students who perform well during the course will be awarded with a scholarship by SCOT to volunteer teaching English in a small community in Cambodia for two weeks, to allow the students to experience the concept of ‘train-the-trainers’.
During the launch at Radisson Hotel, a dialogue session was also held on the topic “Empowerment of Confidence through English Language” where panelists shared experiences from their volunteering stint in Cambodia.
Present as the guest of honour was Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Datin Paduka Hajah Adina Othman.
The event also saw a presentation of mock cheque of $28,500 from HSBC’s Manager Corporate Sustainability Liza Kamarudin to SCOT chairman Anwar Mohammad.
