6 youths to teach English in Cambodia

SIX youths will be selected to teach English in a small community in Cambodia for two weeks.

The students will be chosen from an 11-week basic English course, as part of the non-profit organisation Society for Community Outreach & Training (SCOT)’s education programme.

SCOT yesterday held a sharing session for its English course at the Youth Development Centre (YDC).

Anwar Mohammad, chairman of SCOT, said it is the second time they have held the SCOT Education programme at YDC.

“The uniqueness of this project is the concept of ‘train-the-trainers’ which has allowed SCOT to build self-confidence and empowerment among the selected YDC participants,” he said.

Anwar also said that due to the financial support of HSBC, they have increased the number of participants who will volunteer in Cambodia to six, up from four YDC trainees who went last year.

Muhammad Mahyuddin Hj Othman, project manager of SCOT Education, explained that among the objectives of the programme is to improve self-esteem and emphasise the importance of communication and teamwork.

The course began in April with eight classes. One trainer was assigned to a class to assist the students for an hour every Friday. Each class accommodates around 15 students.

According to a statement from SCOT, one of the programme’s aims was to empower youth with better confidence for job interviews, especially if English is their second language.

SCOT Education 2014 started in April, and will finish next month. The second phase in Cambodia will start in August this year.

The programme is run in collaboration with Cambodia’s Organisation for Building Community Resources.

Attending the sharing session was Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman, US Ambassador Daniel Shields and other MCYS officials.
